AMERICAN HAZELNUT VARIETIES (OSU)
The event, which took place on Friday, October 2, 2026, organized by AGRONUTS E NOCCIOLO SERVICE, offered an opportunity for information and discussion, during which it was possible to observe firsthand—inside the greenhouse—the production of hazelnut trees of American varieties and other types.
Expanding the selection of hazelnut varieties is important to address the production challenges associated with climate change. Alongside the highly valuable Tonda Gentile cultivar, it is useful to experiment with new varieties to improve production stability.
Nocciolo Service and Agronuts are promoting awareness of several North American varieties, such as Pacifica, Yamhill, and McDonald, which could offer producers new opportunities.
In particular, Tonda Pacifica, developed by Oregon State University by crossing Tonda Gentile Trilobata with an American selection, stands out for its rusticity, potential resistance to climate stress, and qualitative characteristics similar to Tonda Gentile.
The introduction of these varieties, however, requires multi-year trials to verify their adaptability to different territories, taking into account climate, soil, water availability, and pollination.
The goal is not to replace traditional varieties, but to complement them with alternatives capable of ensuring more regular production and greater resilience to climate change.
